Procedures to alter the body are collectively described as “body contouring”. These procedures are typically offered after weight loss or pregnancy.
In general, patients who have lost a large amount of weight tend to have excess skin and or fat at key sites such as the abdomen, breast, upper arms and thighs.
The “tummy tuck” is probably the most commonly performed procedure. In such cases, excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen is removed, and the area recontoured. The other areas can also be treated with plastic surgery techniques.
Liposuction also forms an important technique used for body contouring, and in some cases the fat removed may be reinjected at another site to fill areas that are volume deficient. This recycling of fat is termed lipomodelling.
